Wales vs Ghana: Lewis Koumas Scores Late Equalizer as Dragons Salvage Draw in Cardiff

Wales rescued a dramatic late draw against Ghana thanks to a stoppage-time header from Lewis Koumas, denying the Black Stars a hard-fought victory in Cardiff.

The home side looked the more dangerous team for much of the match and were unlucky not to lead early on. Daniel James was at the heart of Wales’ attacking play, striking both the post and the crossbar in a lively first-half display that showcased the hosts’ dominance.

James first came close when his header was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi. Moments later, the Leeds United winger rattled the crossbar with a powerful half-volley after another excellent delivery from David Brooks.

Despite Wales controlling possession and creating the better opportunities, Ghana remained resilient and gradually grew into the contest. Their best first-half chance came after a rare mistake from Welsh goalkeeper Karl Darlow, whose misplaced pass gifted Jordan Ayew an opening. Darlow quickly redeemed himself, however, smothering Ayew’s effort to keep the score level.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Wales pushing forward but struggling to turn their superiority into goals. That wastefulness eventually proved costly.

Against the run of play, Ghana struck first midway through the second half. A swift counter-attack saw Ernest Nuamah force a save from Darlow, and after the rebound bounced off the post, substitute Caleb Yirenkyi reacted quickest to slot home and give the visitors a surprise lead.

The goal sparked celebrations among Ghana’s passionate travelling supporters, who sensed a much-needed victory after a difficult run of results.

Wales, however, refused to give up. As the clock ticked into added time, the hosts finally found the breakthrough their performance deserved. Neco Williams delivered an inviting cross from the right flank, and substitute Lewis Koumas stooped low to guide a precise header into the net.

The goal, which arrived in the third minute of stoppage time, was Koumas’ first for the national team and ensured Wales avoided defeat.

While Craig Bellamy’s side extended their winless run to three matches, there were still plenty of positives to take from a performance filled with energy, creativity, and attacking intent. The result also offered some consolation after their painful World Cup qualification setback against Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier this year.

For Ghana, the draw may feel like a missed opportunity after leading so late in the game, but ending a five-match losing streak will provide a welcome boost in confidence. The Black Stars can now look ahead to their challenging World Cup campaign, where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama in the group stage.

In the end, Wales’ persistence paid off, while Ghana left Cardiff encouraged by signs of improvement in what was the first-ever meeting between the two nations.
