Day 11 of the World Cup delivered everything fans have come to expect from this tournament — rising stars, dramatic saves, surprise results, and more questions about who will eventually lift the trophy.

From Lamine Yamal announcing himself on the biggest stage to Alireza Beiranvand producing one of the best saves of the competition so far, it was another unforgettable chapter in an already thrilling tournament.

Lamine Yamal arrives on the World Cup stage

After an underwhelming opening draw against Cape Verde, Spain needed a response — and they got it in emphatic style.

A dominant 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Atlanta saw Spain return to their best, with 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal finally making his first start of the tournament.

It didn’t take long for him to make his mark.

Just 10 minutes into the match, Yamal opened the scoring, becoming yet another global superstar to find the net at this World Cup alongside Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Vinícius Júnior, and Erling Haaland.

At just 16 years and 338 days old, Yamal had already broken records at Euro 2024 as the youngest player ever to feature at a men’s European Championship. Two years later, he’s no longer just a prodigy — he’s becoming Spain’s main source of inspiration.

Against Saudi Arabia, his brilliance was immediate.

Within 30 seconds, he produced a dazzling piece of skill, taking on three defenders, selling them with a fake inside movement, then spinning away with a flawless Cruyff turn before driving forward with power and confidence.

It was the kind of moment that showed not only his technical quality but how much stronger and more mature he has become.

Substituted at halftime with Spain already 3-0 up, Yamal later posted a simple but powerful message on Instagram:

    “I’m here.”

And judging by his performance, the world is paying attention.

The goalkeepers are stealing the spotlight

While attacking stars continue to shine, this World Cup is increasingly becoming a showcase for goalkeepers.

The standout moment came during Iran’s clash with Belgium.

Belgium thought they had the breakthrough when Kevin De Bruyne delivered a dangerous cross that fell perfectly to Maxim De Cuyper just yards from goal.

With the net seemingly wide open and Alireza Beiranvand on the ground, it looked like a certain goal.

But somehow, Beiranvand stretched out a hand and made an unbelievable stop.

It may already be the save of the tournament.

For Beiranvand, World Cup heroics are nothing new. Fans will remember his famous penalty save against Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2018.

    And he’s not alone.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the tournament’s breakout stories after his stunning performance against Spain, where he faced relentless pressure and kept his side alive.

Meanwhile, Curacao’s Eloy Room matched a historic record by making an incredible 15 saves against Ecuador — equaling the legendary Tim Howard’s famous performance against Belgium in 2014.

Belgium’s own goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, even described this as “the tournament of goalkeepers.”

And honestly, it’s hard to argue.

But despite all the goalkeeping brilliance, the goals keep coming.

The tournament needed just 33 matches to reach the 100-goal mark — the fastest a World Cup has hit that milestone in nearly seven decades.

Cape Verde national football team keep dreaming as the tournament stays wide open

If there’s one team capturing hearts at this World Cup, it’s Cape Verde.

The African underdogs once again defied expectations, battling to a 2-2 draw against two-time champions Uruguay in Miami.

It was their second draw of the tournament, and now history is within reach.

A point against Saudi Arabia in their final group game could be enough to send them into the knockout stages for the first time ever.

But Group H remains one of the most unpredictable in the competition.

Uruguay also sit on two points, while Saudi Arabia still have hope with one.

And this unpredictability isn’t limited to one group.

Across the tournament, only three teams — Haiti, Turkey, and Tunisia — have failed to collect a point after two games.

Meanwhile, only the co-hosts, the United States men’s national soccer team and Mexico national football team, alongside Germany national football team, have secured maximum points and guaranteed their spots in the knockout rounds.

That tells the story of this World Cup perfectly.

There are no easy games anymore.

The gap between football’s giants and emerging nations continues to shrink, making this one of the most competitive and unpredictable tournaments in recent memory.

And with the group stage entering its decisive phase, the drama is only getting started.Image Jun 22 2026 02 40 10 PM
