The 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its grand finale on Sunday as Spain and Argentina clash at New York New Jersey Stadium in what promises to be one of the most memorable finals in recent history.

After weeks of thrilling football, the tournament has come down to two deserving finalists. Spain have dazzled with their disciplined, dominant performances, while defending champions Argentina have shown resilience and championship character to keep their title defence alive. Now, only one team will leave the United States as world champions.

Messi vs Yamal: A Storybook World Cup Final

Beyond the battle for football’s biggest trophy, the final carries a remarkable subplot that has captivated fans across the globe.

For the first time in a senior international match, Lionel Messi will face Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

The matchup is made even more special by a famous photograph from nearly two decades ago. During a UNICEF charity calendar shoot organized by Diario Sport, a young Messi was photographed holding and bathing an infant Yamal.

The image remained largely forgotten until Euro 2024, when Yamal’s father shared it on social media. It quickly went viral, becoming one of football’s most cherished and symbolic photographs.

Now, in an extraordinary twist of fate, the legendary Argentine and the rising Spanish superstar will stand on opposite sides of the pitch with the FIFA World Cup trophy at stake.

Spain Chasing a Fourth World Cup Title

Spain have been among the standout teams throughout the tournament.

Although their campaign began with a frustrating goalless draw against Cape Verde, La Roja responded in impressive fashion, winning six consecutive matches to reach the final.

Their knockout journey has been particularly convincing.

Spain comfortably defeated Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 before edging neighbours Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16. They then overcame Belgium 2-1 in a tightly contested quarter-final before producing one of their finest displays of the tournament to beat France 2-0 in the semi-finals.

Perhaps even more impressive has been Spain’s defensive record. They have conceded just one goal throughout the entire competition, underlining the balance between their attacking quality and defensive solidity.

    Argentina Eye Back-to-Back World Cups

Argentina’s road to the final has been far more demanding.

Lionel Scaloni’s men cruised through the group stage with victories over Algeria, Austria and Jordan, looking every bit the defending champions.

The knockout rounds, however, tested their resolve.

They required extra time to eliminate Cape Verde in the Round of 32 before surviving another gruelling encounter against Egypt in the Round of 16. Their quarter-final against Switzerland also went beyond 90 minutes, with Argentina once again finding a way to advance.

In the semi-finals, they finally secured victory inside regulation time, defeating England 2-1 to book a second successive appearance in the World Cup final.

Their journey has showcased the experience, composure and winning mentality that made them champions four years ago.

A Final Worthy of the Occasion

Sunday’s showdown brings together two teams with contrasting styles and paths to the final.

Spain arrive as the tournament’s most dominant and defensively sound side, while Argentina have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to survive pressure and deliver in the biggest moments.

It also offers one final opportunity for Lionel Messi to add another unforgettable chapter to his legendary career, while Lamine Yamal has the chance to announce himself as football’s newest global superstar on the grandest stage imaginable.

With history, legacy and the FIFA World Cup trophy all on the line, the stage is perfectly set for a spectacular finish to the 2026 tournament.
