England ended their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in unforgettable fashion, defeating France 6-4 in a breathtaking third-place playoff in Miami to secure the bronze medal and their best World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966.

Bukayo Saka was the star of the show, producing a sensational hat-trick as the Three Lions overwhelmed France in a match packed with drama, goals, and momentum swings. Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa, and Jude Bellingham also found the net in a contest that will be remembered as one of the most entertaining games in World Cup history.

    England Race Into Commanding Lead

Thomas Tuchel’s side came flying out of the blocks and stunned France with an incredible first-half display.

Declan Rice opened the scoring after capitalizing on a defensive mistake before Ezri Konsa doubled England’s advantage with a powerful header from one of Rice’s corners.

Saka then struck twice before the interval. His first came after reacting quickest to Marcus Rashford’s saved effort, while his second arrived in stoppage time as he calmly finished Eberechi Eze’s perfectly weighted through ball.

By halftime, England were cruising with a remarkable 4-0 lead, while France looked completely out of sorts.

France Fight Back as Mbappe Makes History

Whatever was said in the French dressing room sparked an immediate response.

Just three minutes after the restart, Kylian Mbappe pulled one back with a composed finish before turning provider six minutes later for Bradley Barcola to make it 4-2.

France continued to pile on the pressure, and Mbappe struck again midway through the second half after combining brilliantly with Michael Olise. The goal not only brought France within one goal of England but also saw Mbappe become the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history with 22 tournament goals.

Suddenly, a contest that had looked finished was wide open.

Saka Completes Hat-Trick Before Bellingham Seals Victory

England managed to steady themselves despite France’s relentless pressure.

Late in the game, Djed Spence won a penalty after being fouled by Malo Gusto. Saka stepped up confidently and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to complete his hat-trick, becoming just the fourth England player to score three goals in a World Cup match.

France refused to surrender, with substitute Ousmane Dembele scoring deep into stoppage time to reduce the deficit once more.

But England had the final word.

Only two minutes later, Jude Bellingham finished off a swift attack to make it 6-4, setting a new record for the most goals scored by an England player at a major international tournament with seven.

    Saka Responds After Limited Opportunities

Saka’s brilliant performance inevitably raised questions about his limited role during England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina, where he remained on the bench.

After the match, the Arsenal winger admitted he wished he had featured more during the tournament.

“Of course, I would have loved to play more,” Saka said. “But now isn’t the time to focus on that. I prefer to do my talking on the pitch.”

He also confirmed he was fully fit throughout the tournament and insisted the squad remained united despite criticism following the semi-final loss.

    Tuchel Defends His Decisions

England manager Thomas Tuchel praised his players’ resilience after an emotionally draining week.

He explained that Saka’s absence against Argentina was simply a tactical decision rather than a reflection of the winger’s importance.

“He has always been a key player for us,” Tuchel said. “I just had a feeling another player would influence the semi-final. Bukayo showed again today exactly what he can do.”

The German coach also highlighted the physical and emotional challenges his squad faced throughout the tournament.

“This team has created something special,” Tuchel added. “Winning the bronze medal is something these players should be proud of. It’s England’s best World Cup finish in 60 years, and they showed incredible mentality.”

    An Unforgettable Ending

Although England fell short of reaching the World Cup final, they signed off with a thrilling victory that showcased their attacking quality and fighting spirit.

Scoring six goals against one of the tournament favourites is no small achievement, and the bronze medal offers a positive ending after the heartbreak of the semi-final defeat.

For France, Didier Deschamps’ final game as head coach ended in disappointment despite Mbappe’s historic achievement. The French captain’s record-breaking World Cup tally was one of the few bright moments on an otherwise frustrating afternoon.

As the curtain falls on England’s World Cup journey, this remarkable 6-4 victory will be remembered as one of the greatest third-place playoff matches ever played and a fitting finale to an unforgettable tournament.Image Jul 19 2026 05 26 21 PM
